Human trafficking is the action or practice of illegally transporting people from one country or area to another, typically for the purposes of forced labor or sexual exploitation. Sex trafficking (a form of human trafficking) involves the sale of humans for sex. Human trafficking is a $150 billion industry and many believe that prostitution contributes to this issue. While sex trafficking is closely linked to prostitution, often overlapping, there is less consensus on how governments should respond to prostitution that involves adults. In order to combat this issue, I’ve concluded that partial decriminalization of prostitution (Nordic Model) must be exercised in the United States to eliminate the demand for commercially exchanged sex. Enforcing partial decriminalization will empower and protect victims, hold offenders accountable, and prevent ongoing harms against individuals and their communities.
